TOYOTA BEHIND SA’S BIGGEST PARA-SPORTS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

TOYOTA BEHIND SA’S BIGGEST PARA-SPORTS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Toyota South Africa Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships will be returning to the Western Cape for the first time since 2019.

The Toyota South Africa Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships will be returning to the Western Cape for the first time since 2019. This year, the games will be hosted by the City of Cape Town, kicking off Friday, 17 March until Wednesday, 22 March 2023.

The games are a good platform for nurturing promising and ambitious athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairment.

The track and field competition which is an internationally sanctioned event with the Paralympic Games in Paris will take place at the Green Point Athletics Stadium.

The University of the Western Cape has been secured for the swimming competition while the Sea Point Civic Centre is scheduled to host the goalball tournament as well as the opening and closing ceremony for the annual multi-sport games. The Killarney Racetrack will be the venue for the road cycling competition while track cycling will be hosted at the Green Point Athletics Stadium.

The championships have historically provided the country’s top athletes with disabilities- a birthplace for their dreams.

At the games, participating para-athletes will compete in sports such as track and field athletics, boccia, goalball, swimming, as well as power-lifting, among others.

Also to feature at the SASAPD Championships is TSAM’s ambassador Ntando Mahlangu – an inspiring young role model and incredible athlete, Ntando is a Tokyo 2020 Paralympic gold medallist and world record holder in athletics.

Start your Impossible

Toyota’s “Start Your Impossible” was the brand’s first global campaign, conceptualised in 2018 to reflect the Olympic and Paralympic spirit of encouragement, challenge and progress. Created in honour of Toyota’s shift to a mobility company and to honour its long global partnership with the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, it is an impassioned call to action which is designed to create a more inclusive and sustainable society in which every individual is encouraged to reach for and achieve his or her personal best.

“The national championships are probably the most important for any athlete with a disability who participates in the sporting codes we offer. It is the last opportunity for these athletes to showcase their athletic ability. It offers them the opportunity to break South African or international records, which are then recognised”, says SASAPD Chairperson Moekie Grobbelaar .

The Partnership

Toyota entered into a partnership with the SASAPD to promote the sporting codes offered at Paralympic level for athletes with disabilities. “At Toyota, we believe that movement and mobility in all its definitions is all around us. Sport has the power to connect people. This is where we learn the true power of sport – it can challenge us, inspire us and, most importantly, unify us,” says Toyota South Africa Motors.

GREAT RESULTS FOR TGRSA AT ROUND 2 OF 2023 GTC CHAMPIONSHIP

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa has successfully completed Round 2 of the 2023 Global Touring Cars (GTC) championship, which took place at the Killarney Race Circuit in Cape Town over the weekend.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa has successfully completed Round 2 of the 2023 Global Touring Cars (GTC) championship, which took place at the Killarney Race Circuit in Cape Town over the weekend. The Toyota Corolla-powered GTC team showed impressive performance and dedication throughout the weekend’s races, and the results speak for themselves.

Saood Variawa, who posted the fastest qualifying time, continued to impress during Race 1, holding his position to cross the finish line in first place, just over a second ahead of his competitors. Nathi Msimanga also showed remarkable skill and determination, finishing in third place. The second race, which had the cars start in reverse order, saw Variawa fight his way to second place, just 1.233sec behind the winner, while Msimanga secured his second third-place finish of the weekend. Michael van Rooyen, who had a difficult weekend, finished in fifth place.

Following his outstanding performances during the weekend, Variawa has extended his lead in the championship standings, and he is determined to maintain his momentum as the competition progresses. Variawa expressed his confidence in the team’s abilities, saying, “It was another solid weekend for us. I’m delighted to have extended my lead in the championship, and I’m confident that we have the right package to continue our strong performances in the next round.”

Msimanga also had an impressive weekend, securing two third-place finishes, proving once again that he is a valuable asset to the team. Van Rooyen, on the other hand, struggled with pace throughout the weekend after fitting the team’s spare engine following a pre-race problem.

The team is now looking forward to Round 3 of the championship, which will take place at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on 20 May 2023. Zwartkops is the team’s home circuit, and as such, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa is confident that they will continue to deliver impressive performances and secure their position at the top of the leader board during the next round of the championship.

TGRSA TO COMPETE IN 2023 SARRC WITH THREE-CAR TEAM: ROUND 1 TAKES PLACE THIS WEEKEND

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) is excited to announce its participation in the Nkomazi 400 race, taking place this coming weekend in the Mpumalanga town of Malalane.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) is excited to announce its participation in the Nkomazi 400 race, taking place this coming weekend in the Mpumalanga town of Malalane. The team will be entering three formidable Toyota Hilux race cars in the FIA T1+ class, as they take on Round 1 of this year’s South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC).

Defending champion Giniel de Villiers will again be partnered with co-driver Denis Murphy, seeking to defend his title, despite facing tough opposition, especially from inside his own camp. Former champion Henk Lategan will make a strong return to the action, with experienced co-driver Brett Cummings by his side. The final car in the TGRSA lineup will be driven by the skilled duo of Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle.

The Nkomazi 400 will cover a distance of just over 400km, kicking off with a 65km qualifying race on Friday, 24 March. The main event will unfold on Saturday, 25 March, promising an adrenaline-filled day for both participants and fans. Enthusiasts can follow the thrilling action on TGRSA’s social media channels or via the RallySafe app.

TGRSA Team Principal Glyn Hall expressed his ambitions for the weekend: “Our primary goal for the team this weekend is to get some points on the board and to gauge our performance against that of our main competitors. We’re confident in the abilities of our drivers and the reliability of our Dakar-winning Hilux vehicles, and we look forward to a strong showing in Malalane.”

The weather forecast for the weekend predicts sunny conditions, with temperatures expected to reach up to 30°C. The Nkomazi 400 has not featured on the SARRC calendar for the last six years, and a return to Malalane, especially in perfect weather conditions, promises a fantastic start to the 2023 SARRC season.

For more information, follow TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa on social media or download the RallySafe app to stay updated on the team’s progress during the Nkomazi 400.
